Illinois methamphetamine trafficking and weapons arrests

It was invented 125 years ago and is sometimes used to treat obesity and attention deficit disorder. Methamphetamine is best known as a popular, illegal recreational stimulant, however. An arrest and conviction for meth trafficking can result in years behind bars.

Several Illinois residents south of Chicago are today confronting that possibility after they were taken into custody and federal, state and local law enforcement agencies seized about $700,000 worth of meth.

According to a news report, eight people were arrested in the investigation that stretched from southern Illinois into northern Kentucky, Tennessee and California. Arrests began late last month, the report stated, with initial busts taking place in Graves County, Kentucky.

Police there seized an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine, as well as weapons and cash. The following day, officers tracked and seized a package of meth allegedly sent by a suspect to a Tennessee home.

A few days ago, federal Drug Enforcement Agency agents executed search warrants in Cairo, Illinois, homes and businesses. Undisclosed amounts of cash, weapons and “more drugs” were seized in the raids, the DEA said.

Two days later, a pair of California men were arrested in Kentucky on suspicions that they were engaged in drug trafficking.

Officials say that in total, more than 17 pounds of methamphetamine has been seized, as well as approximately $50,000 cash.

Agencies involved in the operation included the DEA, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Illinois State Police, Kentucky State Police, as well as several county and city police departments.
