Chicago suspect tries daring escape, but now faces murder charge

The daring escape attempt looked like something out of the movies. Chicago police said a 22-year-old man recently jumped from a sixth story window in an attempt to evade arrest. The escape attempt failed, however, after the man landed on the concrete sidewalk outside of his South Side apartment, breaking bones and suffering serious internal injuries.

According to a report in the Sun-Times, the suspect was taken first to a hospital and later charged in federal court with murder in aid of racketeering and illegal possession of a 9mm handgun.

The newspaper article says the suspect was wearing an electronic monitoring device at the time of the attempted escape and arrest. He was free on bond in a separate case.

In the latest arrest, he is accused of shooting a 27-year-old man in the head late last year at an East 79th gas station. Officials allege that the shooting was done to earn a gang promotion.

In the separate case, he was arrested on charges of assaulting a Chicago police officer and a weapons violation. Officers said they had seen him clutching his waistband as he walked on South Cottage Grove Avenue. They reported that they believed he was carrying a gun and that they then stopped him.

They reportedly “found a small amount of marijuana on him.” He tried to get away then, too. But he was caught and then fought with cops in a patrol car. A police report said he bit and kicked officers after he was handcuffed.

Anyone facing these types of serious charges should speak with a Chicago lawyer experienced in violent crime defense.
